Commune in Maramureș, Romania
Budești (Hungarian : Budfalva or Budfalu , Yiddish : בודשט , romanized : Budesht or Budest ) is a commune in Maramureș County , Maramureș , Romania . It is composed of two villages, Budești and Sârbi (Hungarian : Szerfalva or Szerfalu , Yiddish : סערב , romanized : Sarb or Serb ).
Geography
The commune is located in the central part of Maramureș County, 44 km (27 mi) northeast of the county seat, Baia Mare , and lies on the banks of the river Cosău . County road DJ109F [ro ] connects Budești with the town of Cavnic , 17 km (11 mi) away, through the Neteda Pass [ro ] . The road features a gravity hill , where the layout of the surrounding land produces an optical illusion, making the 8% downhill slope appear to be an uphill slope.[ 3]
Churches
The 17th-century wooden church of Saint Nicholas, Budești Josani is one of eight Wooden Churches of Maramureș that UNESCO has listed as a World Heritage Site .[ 4]

At the 2021 census , the commune had a population of 2,894, of which 97.1% were ethnic Romanians .[ 5]
