Basauri Mosque (Spanish: Mezquita de Basauri; Basque: Basauriko Meskita) is an mosque and Islamic community facility located in Basauri in the province Biscay of Basque Country, Spain. This complex is the largest mosque in Biscay, covering an area of 800 square meters.

History

The local Muslim community officially registered their organization with the Ministry of Justice in 2011 under the name Comunidad Islámica Mezquita de Basauri.[1][2] The construction of the first permanent place of worship was initiated after 2012 Christmas Day to facilitate the Muslim population in Basauri so that they do not have to travel long distances to the center of worship in Bilbao.[3]

The first mosque building was officially opened in early 2013, occupying a former furniture showroom on Pozokoetxe Street, right in front of Buen Pastor Church. This initial facility had a simple layout that included a men's prayer room, a women's prayer area at the back, and ablution facilities. However, the capacity of this place is very limited and can only accommodate around 50 worshippers.[1] As the Muslim population in the area grew, these facilities soon became overcapacity.[3]

To address capacity issues, the community conducted an internal fundraising effort to purchase a new property located between Juan Ibargutxi Street and Foruak Street. The acquired properties have a long history of use in Basauri:[4]

  • 1980s–1990s: Served as the iconic discotheque called People's.
  • 2000s: Converted into a DIA supermarket chain outlet before finally closing.

After undergoing a total renovation process on its interior, the building was transformed into a new mosque complex covering an area of 800 square meters. This new facility officially holds the status of being the largest mosque in Biscay.[1]

This mosque expansion project has sparked political and social debate at the local level in the Basque Country. Right-wing political parties, including the People's Party (PP) and Vox, have criticized the local government (EAJ-PNV and PSE-EE coalition). They demanded total transparency regarding the origin of the development funds and questioned the change in the designation of public space from a night entertainment venue to an Islamic worship center.[5]

On the other hand, religious leaders, interfaith figures, and social activists in Basauri criticized the political narrative because they believed it could trigger Islamophobic sentiments among the community. In order to reduce tensions, regional authorities are optimizing the role of the Consejo Interreligioso de Euskadi (Basque Inter-Religious Council) to guarantee religious freedom, correcting negative stereotypes, as well as maintaining social integration in the local community.[5]
