History
H. L. Omar Lebbe Hajiyar, while working at Kandy Meeramakkam Mosque, envisioned establishing a school in his hometown similar to one near the mosque. On December 13, 1937, he founded the Muslim Mixed School, with its first student being M. I. M. Ashraf and M. A. Rauf, the father of politician Rauf Hakeem, serving as the first teacher.[1]
In 1939, the school became a government institution and was renamed Dehianga Muslim Vidyalaya. C. W. W. Kannangara attended the formal ceremony. The school introduced Ordinary Level classes in 1951 and advanced to Maha Vidyalaya status in 1960, adopting the name Al Azhar and starting Advanced Level grades.[1]
