77th Venice International Film Festival
Film festival
A barrier built in compliance with the safety directions to enforce social distancing blocks the main red carpet during the Festival
The 77th annual Venice International Film Festival was held from 2 to 12 September 2020,[ 5] albeit in a "more restrained format" due to the COVID-19 pandemic .[ 6] [ 7]
Australian actress Cate Blanchett was Jury President of the main competition.[ 8] The Ties , directed by Daniele Luchetti , was the opening film, the first Italian film after 11 years to open the festival.[ 9]
The Golden Lion was awarded to Nomadland , directed by Chloé Zhao . The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to the Michel Franco 's New Order . The Volpi Cup for Best Actor was won by Pierfrancesco Favino for Padrenostro , and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress was won by Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman . The Silver Lion for Best Direction was awarded to Kiyoshi Kurosawa for the movie Wife of a Spy .[ 10]
