Ο Τζόρτζο Μπάστα, Κόμης του Χουστ (Giorgio Basta, 30 Ιανουαρίου 1544 – 20 Νοεμβρίου 1607) ήταν Ιταλός στρατηγός Αρβανίτικης καταγωγής,[4] ο οποίος προσέφερε τις υπηρεσίες του στον Αυτοκράτορα Ροδόλφο Β΄ της Αγίας Ρωμαϊκής Αυτοκρατορίας, αναλαμβάνοντας την διοίκηση των δυνάμεων των Αψβούργων στην διάρκεια του Μακρού Πολέμου κατά την περίοδο 1591-1606 και αργότερα την διοίκηση της Τρανσυλβανίας ως Βασάλος του Αυτοκράτορα[5] με στόχο την επαναφορά του Καθολικισμού ως επικρατέστερης θρησκείας στην Τρανσυλβανία.[6]

Βιογραφία

Με διαταγή του, ο σύμμαχός του Μιχαήλ ο Γενναίος, πρώην άρχοντας της Τρανσυλβανίας, της Βλαχίας και της Μοραβίας, δολοφονήθηκε στο στρατόπεδο του Κερεστέμεζο,[7][8][9] κοντά στο Κάμπια Τούρζι, καθώς ο Μπάστα πίστευε πως ο πρώτος τον απατούσε. Το γεγονός αυτό έλαβε χώρα την 9η Αυγούστου 1601,[10] μονάχα μερικές μέρες μετά την νίκη τους στην Μάχη του Γκούρουσλαου.

Κατά την σύντομη περίοδο διοίκησής του στην Τρανσυλβανία, ο Μπάστα επιχείρησε να ξεριζώσει από την περιοχή τον Προτεσταντισμό. Κατά την πολιτική που είχε θεσμοθετήσει ο Πάπας, οι Ούγγροι Καλβινιστές, οι Σίκουλοι, οι Βλάχοι, οι Σέρβοι, καθώς και οι Λουθηρανοί Σάξονες μπορούσαν να διώκονται με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο από τις αρχές. Μετά από χρόνια εμπόλεμης κατάστασης και της πολιτικής λιτότητας που ακολουθούσε, η πείνα και η πανούκλα έκαναν την εμφάνισή τους στην Τρανσυλβανία. Το 1604, ο Μπάστα νίκησε δύο φορές τις δυνάμεις του Στέφεν Μπόξαϊ, ο οποίος επιχείρησε να αποκτήσει τον έλεγχο της περιοχής της Τρανσυλβανίας.[11]

Μετά από τις πολεμικές του εμπειρίες στην Ανατολική Ευρώπη, κατέληξε στην Πράγα, όπου και πέθανε. Ο Μπάστα συνέταξε αρκετά στρατιωτικά εγχειρίδια, με το πλέον γνωστό εξ αυτών να είναι το Il maestro di campo generale...(Βενετία 1606), και το μεταθανάτιο έργο του με τίτλο Il governo della cavalleria leggiera (Βενετία 1612).[12]
