Mare Crisium

Η Θάλασσα των Κρίσεων (λατινικά: Mare Crisium) είναι σεληνιακή θάλασσα. Βρίσκεται στα βορειοανατολικά της Θάλασσας της Γαλήνης (Mare Tranquillitatis) και εκτιμάται ότι σχηματίστηκε πριν από 4,55 με 3,85 δισεκατομμύρια χρόνια.

Χαρακτηριστικά

Έχει διάμετρο 555 χλμ.[1] και εμβαδόν 176.000 τ.χλμ. Ο πυθμένας της είναι επίπεδος, με αξιόλογο χαρακτηριστικό ένα δακτύλιο από ράχες (dorsa) κοντά στα όριά του. Ο σχηματισμός που θυμίζει ακρωτήριο και προεξέχει προς τα νοτιοανατολικά της θάλασσας ονομάζεται Promontorium Agarum. Στο δυτικό χείλος της Θάλασσας είναι ο κρατήρας Γιερκς, ενώ στα νοτιοανατολικά είναι ο παρόμοιος κρατήρας Λικ. Ο κρατήρας Πικάρ βρίσκεται σε μικρή απόσταση στα ανατολικά του Γιερκς και βορειοδυτικά του Πικάρ είναι οι κρατήρες Πιρς και Σουίφτ. Ejecta από τον σχηματισμό του κρατήρα Πρόκλου επικαλύπτουν το βορειοδυτικό μέρος της.

Ονομασία

Όπως και οι υπόλοιπες «θάλασσες» της Σελήνης, ονομάστηκε έτσι από τον Ιταλό αστρονόμο του 17ου αιώνα Τζοβάνι Ριτσιόλι, του οποίου το σύστημα ονοματοδοσίας παραμένει μέχρι σήμερα.[2]

Ο συγκεκριμένος σχηματισμός στη σεληνιακή επιφάνεια ονομάστηκε επίσης Κασπία Θάλασσα από τους Τόμας Χάριοτ (Thomas Harriot), Πιερ Γκασσεντί (Pierre Gassendi) και Michael Van Langren. Ο Γιούεν Α. Ουίτακερ (Ewen A. Whitaker) εικάζει πως προσδόθηκε το όνομα αυτό διότι ο σχηματισμός έχει την ίδια θέση στη Σελήνη με αυτή της Κασπίας στη Γη, αναφορικά με χάρτες της Ευρώπης, της Βόρειας Αφρικής και της Μέσης Ανατολής.[3] Ο Άγγλος αστρονόμος Ουίλιαμ Γκίλμπερτ (William Gilbert) ανέφερε την περιοχή ως "Μπριτάνια" (από τη Βρετανία) σε χάρτη που συνέταξε περ. στα 1600.[3]

Παρατήρηση και εξερεύνηση

Η Θάλασσα των Κρίσεων είναι μόλις ορατή δια γυμνού οφθαλμού από τη Γη. Φαίνεται ως μια σκουρόχρωμη κηλίδα στο όριο της ορατής πλευράς του φυσικού μας δορυφόρου.

Στην περιοχή συνετρίβη το 1969 το σοβιετικό μη επανδρωμένο διαστημόπλοιο Λούνα 15, ενώ το 1976 το επίσης σοβιετικό ρομποτικό σκάφος Λούνα 24 προσσεληνώθηκε, συνέλεξε δείγματα του εδάφους και τα επέστρεψε πίσω στη Γη.
