Η Ερμεντρούδη της Γαλλίας ήταν κόρη του Βασιλιά των Δυτικών Φράγκων Λουδοβίκου του Τραυλού με την πρώτη σύζυγο του Ανσγκάρδη της Βουργουνδίας την οποία είχε παντρευτεί σε μυστικό γάμο.[2] Το όνομα Ερμεντρούδη το πήρε από την γιαγιά της Ερμεντρούδη της Ορλεάνης.[3] Ο Λουδοβίκος ο Τραυλός είχε πολλά παιδιά με την Ανσγκάρδη όπως οι μετέπειτα βασιλείς Λουδοβίκος Γ΄ της Γαλλίας, Καρλομάνος Β΄, Χίλντεγκαρντ, Γκιζέλα και Ερμεντρούδη, ωστόσο με εντολή του πατέρα του Καρόλου του Φαλακρού την χώρισε για να παντρευτεί σε δεύτερο γάμο την Αδελαΐδα των Παρισίων (875). Με τον θάνατο του πατέρα της ξέσπασαν σκληρές συγκρούσεις για την διαδοχή ανάμεσα στην μητέρα της και την μητριά της Αδελαΐδα, η Ερμεντρούδη παντρεύτηκε τον Ρεζινάρ της Λωρραίνης γιο του Ούνρουοχ Γ΄ του Φρίουλι. Η κόρη της Κουνιγκούντα της Γαλλίας παντρεύτηκε σε πρώτο γάμο (909) τον Βίγκερικ της Λοθαριγγίας κόμη του Μπίντγκαου και του Παλατινάτου της Λοθαριγγίας, σε δεύτερο γάμο παντρεύτηκε τον Ρίκουιν του Βερντέν.
