Ο Γιόζεφ Μαρία Όλμπριχ (Joseph Maria Olbrich) (22 Δεκεμβρίου 1867 - 8 Αυγούστου 1908) γεννήθηκε στην Οπάβα της Αυστριακής Σιλεσίας (σημερινή Τσεχική Δημοκρατία) και απεβίωσε στο Ντίσελντορφ. Σπούδασε αρχιτεκτονική στο Wiener Staatsgewerbeschule και στην Ακαδημία Καλών Τεχνών της Βιέννης, όπου κέρδισε πολλά βραβεία. Υπήρξε μαθητής του Ότο Βάγκνερ (Οtto Wagner). Με τους Γκούσταβ Κλιμτ, Κόλομαν Μόζερ (Koloman Moser) και Γιόζεφ Χόφμαν (Joseph Hoffmann) εξεγέρθηκαν ενάντια στην Ακαδημία και το 1897 ίδρυσαν το κίνημα του Secession στη Βιέννη, ενώ σπουδαία έργα του υπήρξαν η κατοικία Ernst Ludwig στο Ντάρμστατ, το Tietz Department Store στο Ντίσελντορφ, η κατοικία Feinhals στην Κολωνία καθώς και το Hochzeitsturm και τα κτίρια εκθέσεων στο Ντάρμστατ.εγκαταλείπει κάθε πσαραδοσιακή τυπολογία και μορφολογία και φέρει στην αρχιτεκτονική τη γραμμή και χρωματική αποδέσμευση της ζωγραφικής της Απόσχισησ, ιδίως του Κλιμπ.

Το κτίριο του Secession στη Βιέννη

Το κτίριο του Secession στη Βιέννη, με το οποίο καθιερώθηκε η φήμη του Όλμπριχ, χτίστηκε το 1898 και λειτούργησε ως εκθεσιακός χώρος. Στο κτίριο αυτό διακρίνονται οι επιδράσεις τόσο του Βάγκνερ, όσο και του Κλιμτ. Οι κεκλιμένοι τοίχοι, τα βαριά γείσα, η αξονικότητα και το μοτίβο με τις δάφνες που αποδίδεται σαν διάτρητος μεταλλικός θόλος, τοποθετημένος σε επίπεδους όγκους είναι μερικά από τα αρχιτεκτονικά χαρακτηριστικά αυτού του ναού της τέχνης της εποχής του βιεννέζικου μοντερνισμού.

Η κατοικία Ernst Ludwig

Η κατοικία του Μεγάλου Δούκα Ernst Ludwig χτίστηκε το 1901 και αποτελούσε το πιο προοδευτικό έργο που σχεδίασε ο Όλμπριχ κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής του στο Ντάρμστατ. Σε αυτό οι επιδράσεις του Βάγκνερ είχαν εξαφανιστεί και έτσι π.χ. αντί των βαρέων γείσων υπήρχαν μεγάλες προεξέχουσες μαρκίζες. Ιδιαίτερο στοιχείο αυτού του κτιρίου, που διέθετε πολλούς εργαστηριακούς χώρους, ήταν η αψιδωτή είσοδος που πλαισιωνόταν από δύο γιγαντιαία αγάλματα, έργα του γλύπτη Ludwig Habich. Η κατοικία αυτή με την ψηλή, λευκή πρόσοψη και τα διατεταγμένα οριζόντια ανοίγματα, αποτελούσε το κέντρο της καλλιτεχνικής παροικίας του Ντάρμστατ.

Η κατοικία Feinhals

Το Feinhals house στην Κολωνία, ένα από τα τελευταία έργα του Όλμπριχ, αποτελεί το δείγμα της αρχιτεκτονικής του εξέλιξης. Η σύγκριση της κατοικίας με προηγούμενα έργα του αρχιτέκτονα δείχνει πως πλέον ο Όλμπριχ είχε ξεπεράσει τον υπερβολικό ατομικισμό και είχε φτάσει στην απλότητα της μορφής και σε έναν πιο παραδοσιακό τύπο αρχιτεκτονικής.
