Zalanthias ist eine Gattung der Fahnenbarsche (Anthiadidae). Die meisten Arten der Gattung kommen in den Korallen- und Felsriffen des tropischen und subtropischen Indopazifiks vor, drei weitere Arten (Z. exsul, Z. nazcae und Z. parini) leben im Ostpazifik.

Merkmale

Wie fast alle Fahnenbarsche sind die Zalanthias-Arten relativ kleine Fische von rötlicher Farbe. Das Maul ist groß und endständig, mit einem leicht vorstehenden Unterkiefer. Rumpf und Kiemendeckel sind mit relativ großen Kammschuppen bedeckt. Die Basen von Rückenflosse, Afterflosse, Schwanzflosse, Brustflossen und Bauchflossen sind beschuppt, wobei sich die Beschuppung bis auf die Flossenmembranen erstreckt. Auf dem Kiemendeckel befinden sich drei Stacheln, von denen der mittlere am längsten ist. Der hintere Rand des Präoperculums ist fein gesägt. Gaumenzähne sind vorhanden. Zwischen dem hart- und dem weichstrahligen Abschnitt der Rückenflosse befindet sich eine Einbuchtung.[1]

Systematik

Die Gattung Zalanthias wurde 1910 durch die US-amerikanischen Fischkundler David Starr Jordan und Robert Earl Richardson als Untergattung von Pseudanthias eingeführt.[2] Der US-amerikanische Ichthyologe John Ernest Randall synonymisierte die Gattung 1961 mit Plectranthias.[3] Sie wurde im Dezember 2025 aber wieder revalidiert, da sich die Gattung Plectranthias als nicht monophyletisch herausgestellt hat.[1]
