Anima Anandkumar (geboren in Mysore; vollständiger Name Animashree Anandkumar) ist eine indische Informatikerin und Hochschullehrerin. Sie lehrt seit 2017 als Bren Professor of Computing am California Institute of Technology und ist seit 2018 für Nvidia als Director of Machine Learning tätig.

Leben und Werk

Anandkumar erhielt 2004 einen Bachelorabschluss als Elektroingenieurin am Indian Institute of Technology Madras und wurde 2009 an der Cornell University promoviert. Anschließend war sie bis 2010 Postdoc am Massachusetts Institute of Technology und wurde im gleichen Jahr Professorin an der University of California, Irvine. Darüber hinaus war sie von 2012 bis 2014 bei Microsoft Research sowie von 2016 bis 2018 als Principal Scientist bei Amazon Web Services tätig.

Ihre Forschung umfasst sowohl theoretische als auch praktische Aspekte des maschinellen Lernens im großen Maßstab. Insbesondere hat sie die Forschung zu neuronalen Operatoren, tensoralgebraischen Methoden, nichtkonvexer Optimierung, probabilistischen Modellen und Deep Learning maßgeblich vorangetrieben. Ihre KI-Algorithmen haben wissenschaftliche Bereiche wie Wettervorhersage, Wirkstoffforschung, wissenschaftliche Simulationen und Konstruktion revolutioniert. Sie entwickelte das erste KI-basierte hochauflösende Wettermodell, das zehntausende Male schneller und gleichzeitig präziser als herkömmliche Vorhersagesysteme ist. Ihre KI-Methode führte zur Entwicklung eines verbesserten medizinischen Katheters mit hundertfach reduzierter bakterieller Kontamination.[1][2]

Sie ist Fellow des IEEE und der ACM und gehört dem Expertennetzwerk des Weltwirtschaftsforums an. Sie wurde mit mehreren Preisen ausgezeichnet, darunter dem Guggenheim- und dem Alfred P. Sloan-Stipendium, dem National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award sowie mit Preisen für die besten wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten auf Konferenzen wie Neural Information Processing und dem ACM Gordon Bell Special Prize für HPC-basierte COVID-19-Forschung.[3][4]

Am 19. August 2026 betrug ihr h-Index bei Google Scholar 108.
