Cheek gik på University of Reading og dimitterede med en B.Sc. i 1981 og en M.Sc i 1983. Han fik titlen DPhil ved University of Oxford i 1989.[1]

Forskning

Sammen med Matthew Jebb har Cheek gennemgået den kødædende planteslægt kandebærer (Nepenthes) i to store monografier: "A skeletal revision of Nepenthes" fra 1997[2] og en mere dybdegående behandling af arter i den biogeografiske region Malesia til Flora Malesiana i 2001.[3]

I disse og andre værker har Cheek beskrevet en række arter, der er nye for videnskaben, ofte i samarbejde med Jebb. Disse omfatter: N. abalata,[4] N. abgracilis,[5] N. alzapan,[6] N. argentii,[2] N. aristolochioides,[2] N. cid,[5] N. danseri,[2] N. diatas,[2] N. extincta,[7] N. hurrelliana,[8] N. kitanglad,[7] N. kurata,[7] N. lamii,[2] N. leyte,[7] N. mira,[9] N. murudensis,[2] N. negros,[10] N. ramos,[11] N. robcantleyi,[12] N. samar,[13] N. thai,[14] and N. ultra.[15] Cheek and Jebb also raised N. macrophylla to species rank.[2]

I 2022 beskrev han sammen med George Gosline træet Uvariopsis dicaprio.[16][17]

Cheek og hans forskning er omtalt i dokumentaren The Mists of Mwanenguba.[18]
