Y weithred o adael gwlad er mwyn setlo mewn gwlad arall yw ymfudo neu allfudo a hynny fel arfer, yn barhaol. Mae'r gair yn tarddu o'r gair "mudo" sydd yntau'n tarddu o "symud". Cafodd y gair "ymfudo" ei ddefnyddio'n gyntaf yn y Gymraeg ym 1830. Ar 28 Mai 1865, cychwynnodd ymfudwyr Cymreig ar eu taith hir o Lerpwl i Batagonia dan arweiniad Michael D. Jones. Dyma enghraifft o ymfudo. Mae'n digwydd yn aml o ganlyniad i dlodi, afiechyd, erlid crefyddol a gwleidyddol neu ryfel. Mae llawer o ffoaduriaid rhyfel yn ymfudo. Mae'r rhesymau uchod yn ffactorau sy'n gwthio pobl. Ond ceir rhesymau sy'n atynu hefyd: gwelliant mewn darpariaeth iechyd, addysg neu ffactorau economaidd, e.e. mae llawer o Brydeinwyr wedi ymfudo i Jersey a'r Swistir i arbed talu treth.
