Y retina (hefyd rhwyden) yw'r haen fwyaf mewnol o belen y llygad ac sy'n bilen oleusensitif amlhaenog dyner. Mae opteg y llygad yn creu delwedd o'r byd gweledol ar y retina (trwy'r cornbilen a'r lens), sy'n gweithio mewn ffordd nid annhebyg i ffilm mewn camera.
Mae'r golau sy'n taro'r retina yn creu rhaeadr o ddigwyddiadau cemegol a thrydanol sydd yn y pen draw yn achosi cynhyrfiadau nerfol. Mae rhain yn cael eu hanfon i wahanol ganolfannau gweledol yn yr ymenydd drwy ffibrau'r nerf optig.
