Saif Ostrava yn nwyrain y wlad, ar afon Oder. Ffurfiwyd y ddinas fel y mae heddiw yn 1945, pan unwyd Moravská Ostrava (Almaeneg: Mährisch Ostrau) a Slezská Ostrava (Schlesisch Ostrau, hefyd: Polnisch Ostrau). Saif ar y ffin rhwng tiriogaethau hanesyddol Morafia a Silesia, ar hen lwybr masnach. Mae'n ganolfan ddiwydiannol bwysig, er bod llawer o'r pyllau glo a gweithfeydd dur yn yr ardal wedi cau yn y blynyddoedd diwethaf, a diweithdra wedi cynyddu.

Ceir dwy brifysgol yma, a phedair theatr, yn cynnwys y Národní divadlo moravskoslezské (Theatr Genedlaethol Morafia-Silesia), sydd a dau adeilad, un wedi ei enwi ar ôl Antonín Dvořák.
