Fe'i ganwyd yn Glasgow yn 1890, a mynychodd Brifysgol Llundain. Yn 1920 fe'i penodwyd fel cyfarwyddwr Amgueddfa Genedlaethol Cymru, Caerdydd.

Mae ei waith cloddio yn cynnwys safleoedd Celtaidd o'r cyfnod Rhufeinig ym Mhrydain, er enghraifft Maiden Castle, gwaith ar isgyfandir India fel cyfarwyddwr Arolwg Archaeolegol India (1944 - 1948), er enghraifft ym Mohenjo-daro, un o brif safleoedd Gwareiddiad Dyffryn Indus, ac ym Mesopotamia (er enghraifft yn Ur).
