Melysion sydd â blas o wreiddiau'r planhigyn gwylys yw licris. Mae ganddo flas melys a chwerw sy'n debyg i anis.[1] Cafodd ei ddefnyddio fel meddyginiaeth a bwyd dogn i filwyr am filoedd o flynyddoedd, cyn i'r cemegydd o Sais George Dunhill ychwanegu siwgr a chynhwysion eraill at wraidd y gwylys ym 1760.[2]

Cymysgir y rhin gwraidd gwylys â siwgr, dŵr, gelatin, a blawd i greu past hydrin o liw du neu frown, sy'n blasu'n wydn a chnoadwy. Caiff ei siapio'n bibellau neu stribedi hirion a elwir yn "lasys", a ellir eu rholio i wneud olwynion licris. Cyfunir gyda phast siwgr meddal i wneud licris cymysg, sy'n felysion traddodiadol poblogaidd yng Ngwledydd Prydain. Mae'r rhain mewn haenau o licris du a phast lliwgar sy'n debyg i farsipán, neu'n dalpiau o licris wedi eu rholio mewn vermicelli siwgr.[3] Tyfir gwylys ym Mhrydain yn gyntaf gan fynachod Dominicaidd yn Pontefract, Swydd Efrog, yn y 16g, ac yn y dref honno yn draddodiadol cynhyrchir teisenni Pontefract.[4]
