Cyflwr meddyliol (theori cyflwr) neu set o gredoau ac agweddau (theori di-gyflwr) ydy hypnosis. Gan amlaf, caiff hypnosis ei achosi gan anwythiad hypnotig, sy'n cynnwys cyfres o gyfarwyddiadau ac awgrymiadau rhagarweiniol fel arfer.[1] Gellir cyflwyno'r awgrymiadau hypnotig yng ngwydd y person, neu gellir eu hunan-weinyddu ("hunan-awgrymu" neu "awtoawgrymu"). Cyfeirir at ddefnyddio hypnosis at ddibenion triniaethol fel "hypnotherapi" neu "gwsgdriniaeth".

Yn groes i'r gred boblogaidd - fod hypnosis yn debyg i fod yn anymwybodol fel pan yn cysgu - awgryma ymchwil diweddar ei fod yn gyflwr effro o sylw wedi'i ffocysu[2] ac hygoeledd amlycach,[3] gyda llai o ymwybyddoaeth o'r hyn sy'n digwydd o'ch amgylch.[4] Yn y llyfr cyntaf ar y pwnc hwn, Neurypnology (1843), disgrifiodd Braid "hypnotiaeth" fel cyflwr o ymlacio corfforol a anwythir gan ganolbwyntio meddyliol.[5]
