Plasdy Cymreig a godwyd yn yr Oesoedd Canol ar safle sy'n gorwedd yn Swydd Henffordd, Gorllewin Canolbarth Lloegr, bellach yw Hergest. Fe'i lleolir ym mhlwyf Ceintun (Saesneg: Kington), tua 3 milltir yr ochr draw i'r ffin rhwng Maesyfed (Powys), Cymru a Swydd Henffordd. Mae'n enwog fel y man lle diogelwyd Llyfr Coch Hergest, un o'r llawysgrifau Cymraeg pwysicaf, sy'n cynnwys testunau cynnar o chwedlau'r Mabinogion.[1]

Roedd Hergest yn gartref i un o ganghennau teulu'r Fychaniaid. Sylfaenwyd y plas yn y 15g gan Tomas ap Rosier Fychan, un o feibion Rhosier Fychan o blas Brodorddyn. Roedd yn frawd i Roger Vaughan o Dretŵr, Brycheiniog.[1]

Daeth aelwyd Tomas a'i wraig Elen Gethin yn adnabyddus fel cyrchfan rhai o feirdd mawr y cyfnod, yn cynnwys Lewys Glyn Cothi a Guto'r Glyn.[1]

Credir fod Llyfr Coch Hergest wedi ei ysgrifennu tua diwedd y 14g neu ddechrau'r 15fed ar gyfer Hopcyn ap Tomas o Ynys Dawe ac Ynysforgan, ar benrhyn Gŵyr. Ymddengys iddo ddod i feddiant John Vaughan o Dretŵr yn 1465 ac iddo fynd oddi yno i Hergest. Bu ym meddiant y teulu hyd ddechrau'r 17g a dyna pam y cafodd yr enw (mae coch yn cyfeirio at liw ei gloriau). Ceir testunau o chwedlau'r Mabinogion, y Brutiau a detholiad o gerddi cynnar ynddo.[1]

Llawysgrif arall a gysylltir â Hergest yw Llyfr Gwyn Hergest. Collwyd y llyfr ar ddechrau'r 19g ond mae rhan o'r cynnwys ar glawr diolch i waith copïwyr, yn cynnwys rhai o gerddi Lewys Glyn Cothi.[2]
