Mewn ffiseg mae'r hen air Cymraeg gwefr yn cyfeirio at wefr drydanol. Fe'i disgrifir gan wyddonwyr fel "yr hyn sy'n llifo oddi fewn i'r cerrynt" a chaiff ei alw weithiau yn "wefr Noether".

"Cerrig" ambr ('gwefr'): un o'u priodweddau ydyw eu bont yn cario trydan statig ac achosi math o wreichionen. O'r hynodwedd hwn y daeth yr enw.

Un o hen ystyron y gair Cymraeg gwefr yw 'ambr' (Saesneg: amber), y grisial oren hwnnw a ffurfir allan o resin coeden. Drwy rwbio lwmp ohono sylweddolwyd y gall wreichioni (trydan statig) ac felly daeth y term i olygu'r wefr trydan yn ogystal â'r "garreg". Diddorol yw canfod ymhellach i'r gair drosglwyddo o'r fflachiadau hyn o olau i'r sioc y caiff person o'i weld e.e. "Cafodd Huw wefr o wylio'r ffilm." Yr enw Groegaidd ar y garreg ydy "electrwm" oherwydd ei briodweddau trydanol.
