Cynhyrchwyd chwislau tun gyntaf gan ffatri Robert Clarke ym Manceinion ym 1840.[2] Fe'u gwerthwyd am geiniog; roeddynt yn hawdd i'w chwarae ac yn cael eu hystyried yn degan. Fe'u mabwysiadwyd yn gyflym gan sawl traddodiad gwerin ym Mhrydain ac Iwerddon. Yn Iwerddon yn arbennig daeth traddodiad chwarae'r offeryn yn soffistigedig, gyda repertoire o addurniadau cywrain.
