Enwir Braille ar ôl y Ffrancwr Louis Braille (1809 – 1852), a aeth yn ddall o ganlyniad i ddamwain yn ei blentyndod. Yn 1824, pan oedd yn 15 oed, fe ddatblygodd gôd ar sail yr wyddor Ffrangeg a'r hen ddull o sonographie. Cyhoeddodd ei system yn 1829, a'i ddiwygiad ohoni yn 1837.
