Golygfa o draeth sy'n dangos y lithosffer (y ddaear), hydrosffer (y môr) a'r atmosffer (yr awyr)

Y biosffer (o'r Groeg βίος bíos "bywyd" a σφαῖρα sphaira "sffer") hefyd yn cael ei adnabod fel yr ecosffer (o'r Groeg οἶκος oîkos "amgylchedd" ac σφαῖρα), yw holl ecosystemau'r byd yn eu cyfanrwydd. Mae hefyd yn gallu cael ei alw'n barth bywyd ar y Ddaear, system gaëedig (ar wahân i ymbelydredd solar a chosmig a'r gwres a ddaw o grombil y Ddaear), ac sydd i raddau helaeth yn hunan-reoleiddio. Yn ôl y diffiniad bïoffisiolegol mwyaf cyffredinol, y system ecolegol byd-eang yw'r bïosffer sy'n integreiddio'r holl fodau byw a'u perthynas â'i gilydd, yn cynnwys eu rhyngweithio ag elfennau o'r lithosfferer, geosffer, hydrosffer, a'r atmosffer.

Mewn ystyr gyffredinol, biosfferau yw unrhyw systemau caëedig, hunan-reoleiddiedig sy'n cynnwys ecosystemau. Mae hyn yn cynnwys biosfferau megis Biosffer 2 a BIOS-3, ac o bosib rhai ar blanedau a lleuadau eraill.[1]
