Mae pobl sy'n atopig yn fwy tebygol o ddatblygu alergeddau oherwydd bod eu cyrff yn cynhyrchu mwy o'r gwrthgorff Imiwnoglobwlin E (IgE) na'r arfer. Er bod atopedd yn cael ei etifeddu, mae ffactorau amgylcheddol hefyd yn chwarae rhan yn natblygiad anhwylderau alergaidd, ac o ganlyniad nad yw holl aelodau teulu yn cael eu heffeithio i'r un graddau.[1]
