Saif ym mhen draw aber afon Loc'h. Mae ysgol gynradd ddwyieithog yno ers 1999. Mae'n ffinio gyda Brech, Pluneret, Crach, Ploemel ac mae ganddi boblogaeth o tua 14,207 (1 Ionawr 2023). Mae An Alre yn un o drefi Bro-Wened, un o naw fro hanesyddol Llydaw.

Ymladdwyd brwydr olaf Rhyfel Olyniaeth Llydaw gerllaw ar 29 Medi 1341, pan laddwyd Charles de Blois.

Mae'r dref yn bencadlys i wasanaeth teledu ar-lein Llydaweg ei hiaith, brezhoweb a sefydlwyd yn 2006.
