Stanton Prior és un petit poble dins de la parròquia civil de Marksbury, al districte de Bath and North East Somerset, al comtat cerimonial de Somerset, Anglaterra. Està situat a la campinya del Ducat de Cornualla, entre Newton St. Loe i Marksbury, 6 milles (9.7 km) a l'oest de la ciutat britànica de Bath. El 1931 la parròquia tenia una població de 85 habitants.[1] L'1 d'abril de 1933 la parròquia va ser abolida i fusionada amb Marksbury.[2]

Història

Stanton Prior deriva el seu nom de l'anglès antic "Stantona" (que significa "Poble de Pedra") i té fama de ser un dels pobles més petits de Somerset,[3] format per dues granges, 21 cases i l'església de St. Lawrence, que té els seus orígens al segle XII però que és principalment del segle XV i va ser sotmesa a una important restauració el 1860. L'església ha estat designada per English Heritage com a edifici catalogat de Grau II.

El poble era propietat dels reis saxons que el van donar a l'abadia de Bath abans de la conquesta normanda i va ser en mans del prior fins a la dissolució dels monestirs. Aleshores va ser concedit a Thomas Horner, que el va vendre al general Erington el 1544.[4] La parròquia de Stanton Prior formava part del Keynsham Hundred.[5]

A prop, a Stantonbury Hill, hi ha les restes d'un castre de l'edat del ferro conegut com a Stantonbury Camp,[6] que es troba a la línia de Wansdyke.[7] Stanton acull una rara bomba de cadena, tot i que sense la cadena.[8]
