Un editor visual és un programari informàtic per editar fitxers de text mitjançant una interfície d'usuari textual o gràfica que normalment renderitza el contingut (text) d'acord amb el codi de marcatge incrustat, per exemple, HTML, Wikitext, en lloc de mostrar el text en brut. Les edicions fetes a la pàgina apareixen en temps real, correctament formatades, i sovint es denominen WYSIWYG (el que veus és el que obtens). És habitual que el programari permeti canviar al mode d'editor de codi font perquè es pugui visualitzar o modificar el codi font original.[1][2]

Per definició, tots els editors visuals requereixen un dispositiu de visualització que es pugui actualitzar. Tanmateix, alguns editors que utilitzen aquests dispositius, com ara BRIEF, ISPF, gVim, KEDIT, THE, XEDIT, no són editors visuals.[3]
