Brian Murphy (Ventnor, illa de Wight, Anglaterra, 25 de setembre de 1932) és un actor britànic.^[1]

Biografia

Encara que és un actor prolífic en moltes pel·lícules i en teatre, produccions durant gairebé mig segle, és més conegut pel seu paper de George Roper en la sèrie britànica Man about the house i sobretot pel spin-off George and Mildred.

En els anys 1970, Murphy va combinar el seu treball de teatre amb aparicions en programes de televisió com The Avengers, Z-Cars, Callan i Dixon of Dock Green, abans de treballar en el paper que li donaria la fama.

A Man about the house, Murphy va interpretar al mandrós George Roper, propietari d'una casa on el pis de dalt habiten un jove i dues noies. La seva esposa, Mildred, va ser interpretada per Yootha Joyce. Contrastava l'afany de l'esposa dominant per ascendir socialment, amb el desig de George per una vida fàcil i tranquil·la. Quan Man about the house va finalitzar en 1976, es va crear un spin-off per a Murphy i Joyce, anomenat George and Mildred. Va durar cinc temporades, fins a 1979.^[2]

Yootha va morir en 1980 com a conseqüència d'un insuficiència hepàtica, resultat tràgic d'anys d'alcoholisme crònic. Murphy, que estava en aquest moment al seu costat com a amic més pròxim, va quedar molt afectat.^[3] Va tornar posteriorment al teatre, però ha actuat esporàdicament a televisió, amb papers memorables a Lame Ducks (com a investigador privat), The Bill (com a vagabund borratxo vestit d'elf) i Last of the Summer Wine (com Alvin Smedley), entre altres incomptables aparicions. La seva aparició regular més recent ha estat a The Catherine Tate Show.

Ha estat doblat habitualment al castellà per l'actor Rafael de Penagos.^[4]
