Netflix je pružatelj video na zahtjev servisa dostupan korisnicima širom svijeta (osim u Kini, Siriji, Sjevernoj Koreji i na Krimu)[5] i nudi i mogućnost primanja DVD i Blu-ray diskova poštom u Sjedinjenim Državama po fiksnoj cijeni (još poznato kao flat rate). Kompanija je osnovana 1997. godine i sjedište joj je u gradu Los Gatos u sjevernoj Kaliforniji. Kompanija je počela sa pružanjem usluga putem pretplate 1999. godine. Već do 2009. godine Netflix je imao oko 100.000 DVD naslova u ponudi i preko 10 miliona pretplatnika.[6]

Prema podacima iz septembra 2014. godine, Netflix ima pretplatnike u preko 40 zemalja sa namjerom proširenja servisa u zemlje koje trenutno ne pokriva (kao što su Novi Zeland i Australija).[7]

25. februara 2007. godine, Netflix je dostavio svoj milijarditi DVD.[8] U aprilu 2011, Netflix je imao 23,6 miliona pretplatnika u SAD-u i preko 26 miliona širom svijeta.[9] U 2011. godini Netflix je dostigao najmanje 1,5 milijardi $ u digitalnim prihodima.[10] S druge strane, 23. oktobra 2013. godine, Netflix je prijavio pad od 88% prihoda za treću četvrtinu fiskalne godine.[11] U januaru 2013. godine, Netflix je objavio da su dodali oko dva miliona korisnika u SAD-u tokom zadnje četvrtine 2012. godine što je činilo ukupno 27,1 miliona korisnika servisa u SAD-u i 29,4 miliona ukupno. Dodatno, prihodi su se povećali za 8% na 945 miliona $ u tom istom periodu.[12]

Sredinom marta 2013. godine Netflix je imao 33 miliona pretplatnika.[13] Taj je broj porastao na 36,3 miliona pretplatnika (29,2 miliona u SAD-u) u aprilu 2013. godine.[14] Prema podacima iz druge četvrtine 2014. godine, Netflix ima preko 50 miliona pretplatnika širom svijeta.[15]
