যখন তরল অক্সিজেন একটি বিকার থেকে একটি শক্তিশালী চুম্বকের ওপর ঢালা হয়, চুম্বকটির দুই মেরুর মাঝখানে অক্সিজেন কিছুক্ষণের জন্য ঝুলন্ত অবস্থায় থাকে, এর প্যারাচুম্বকত্বের কারণে।

তরল অক্সিজেন হল দ্বি পরমাণু অক্সিজেনের তরল রূপ। এর ব্যবহার দেখা যায় মহাকাশ, ডুবোজাহাজ এবং গ্যাস শিল্পে। ১৯২৬ সালে রবার্ট এইচ গডার্ডের আবিষ্কার করা প্রথম তরল-জ্বালানী রকেটে এটি জারক হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়েছিল।[১] এই ব্যবহারটি এখনো চলে আসছে।

তরল অক্সিজেনের নিম্নতাপীয় প্রকৃতির কারণে, যে পদার্থগুলিতে এটি স্পর্শ করা হয়, সেগুলি ভঙ্গুর হয়ে উঠতে পারে। তরল অক্সিজেন একটি খুব শক্তিশালী জারকও: জৈব পদার্থ তরল অক্সিজেনে খুব দ্রুত পুড়ে যায়। উপরন্তু, তরল অক্সিজেনে ভেজানো কিছু উপকরণ, যেমন কয়লা ব্রিকেট, কালো কার্বন, ইত্যাদি যদি অগ্নিসংযোগের উৎস যেমন অগ্নি স্ফুলিঙ্গ বা হালকা ঘা পায়, তাহলে অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে বিস্ফোরণ ঘটাতে পারে। আস্ফাল্ট সহ পেট্রোরাসায়নিক গুলিতে প্রায়ই এই আচরণ দেখা যায়।[৫]

১৯২৪ সালে গিলবার্ট নিউটন লুইস প্রথম চতুঃঅক্সিজেন অণুর (O৪) ভবিষ্যদ্বাণী করেছিলেন, তরল অক্সিজেন কেন ক্যুরীর নীতি মেনে চলে না, তা ব্যাখ্যা করার জন্য তিনি এটিকে প্রস্তাব করেছিলেন।[৬] আধুনিক কম্পিউটার দ্বারা পরীক্ষায় দেখা গেছে যে, যদিও তরল অক্সিজেনে স্থিতিশীল কোন O৪ অণু নেই, কিন্তু তার O২ অণুগুলির প্রতি-সমান্তরাল ঘূর্ণনের সাথে দুটি করে জোট বাঁধার প্রবণতা দেখা যায়, যার ফলে তাৎক্ষণিক O৪ অণু তৈরি হয়।[৭]

তরল নাইট্রোজেনের স্ফুটনাঙ্ক −১৯৬ °সে (৭৭ কেলভিন), এটি অক্সিজেনের স্ফুটনাঙ্ক −১৮৩ °সে (৯০ কেলভিন) এর থেকে অনেকটা কম। তরল নাইট্রোজেনযুক্ত পাত্র বাতাসের অক্সিজেনের ঘনীভবন করতে পারে: যখন নাইট্রোজেনের বেশিরভাগ অংশটি এমন পাত্র থেকে বাষ্প হয়ে যায় তখন ঝুঁকি থাকে যে অবশিষ্ট তরল অক্সিজেন জৈব পদার্থের সাথে বিক্রিয়া করে বিষ্ফোরন ঘটাতে পারে। আবার উল্টো দিকে, তরল নাইট্রোজেন বা তরল বায়ু খোলা বাতাসে রাখলে অক্সিজেন সমৃদ্ধ হতে পারে; বায়ুমণ্ডলীয় অক্সিজেন এতে দ্রবীভূত হয়, অন্যদিকে নাইট্রোজেন বাষ্পীভূত হয়ে যায়

ব্যবহার

ইউ.এস. বিমান বাহিনীর একজন প্রযুক্তিবিদ আফগানিস্তানের বাগরাম বায়ুক্ষেত্রে একটি লকহিড মার্টিন সি-১৩০ জে সুপার হারকিউলিস বিমানে তরল অক্সিজেন স্থানান্তর করেছেন। মার্কিন বিমান বাহিনী প্রতি মাসে শুধুমাত্র এই বায়ুক্ষেত্রেই ৪,০০০ ইউএস গ্যালন (১৫,০০০ লি) এরও বেশি তরল অক্সিজেন বহন করার অনুমতি দেয় উচ্চতাজনিত শ্বাসকষ্টে শ্বাস নিতে সহায়তা করার জন্য।[৯]

বাণিজ্যিকভাবে তরল অক্সিজেনকে শিল্প গ্যাস হিসাবে শ্রেণিবদ্ধ করা হয় এবং শিল্প এবং চিকিৎসার উদ্দেশ্যে ব্যাপকভাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। বায়ুতে প্রাকৃতিকভাবে প্রাপ্ত অক্সিজেন থেকে নিম্নতাপী বায়ু পৃথকীকরণ কারখানায় আংশিক পাতন প্রক্রিয়ায় তরল অক্সিজেন পাওয়া যায়।

বিমানবাহিনী তরল অক্সিজেনের ব্যবহারে কৌশলগত গুরুত্বকে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে স্বীকৃতি দিয়েছে, বিকারক এবং হাসপাতালে ও অনেক উচ্চতার বিমান উড়ানে শ্বাস নেওয়ার জন্য বায়বীয় অক্সিজেনের সরবরাহ উভয় হিসাবেই। ১৯৮৫ সালে ইউ.এস. বিমান বাহিনী সমস্ত বড় বিমান ঘাঁটিতে নিজস্ব অক্সিজেন উৎপাদন করার একটি কর্মসূচি শুরু করেছিল।[১০][১১]

তরল অক্সিজেন হল মহাকাশগামী রকেট চালক যন্ত্রে প্রয়োগের জন্য, সবচেয়ে সাধারণ নিম্নতাপী তরল জারক, সাধারণত এর সঙ্গে তরল হাইড্রোজেন, কেরোসিন বা মিথেনের মিশ্রণ থাকে।[১২][১৩]
