গারো ব্যাপ্টিস্ট কনভেনশন, বিরিশিরি, দুর্গাপুর, নেত্রকোনা

গারো[১] ব্যাপ্টিস্ট কনভেনশন (জিবিসি)। নেত্রকোনার দুর্গাপুর উপজেলার বিরিশিরিতে চার্চটি প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয় ১৮৮১ সালে। পুনর্নিমাণ করা হয় ১৯১১-তে। তবে এর কাজ শুরু হয় ১৮৭৪ সালে। নেত্রকোনা ও ময়মনসিংহ জেলার গারো আদিবাসীদের ব্যাপ্টিস্ট খ্রিস্টান সম্প্রদায়ে কনভার্ট করার কাজ এখান থেকেই শুরু হয়েছিলো।

বাংলাদেশে জিবিসির (গারো ব্যাপ্টিস্ট কনভেনশন) কেন্দ্রীয় কার্যালয় হওয়ায় পরে এটি বিরিশিরি ব্যাপ্টিস্ট মাতৃমণ্ডলী হিসেবে পরিচিতি পায়। বাংলাদেশে অবস্থিত অন্যান্য ব্যাপ্টিস্ট কনভেনশনগুলো হলো বাংলাদেশ ব্যাপ্টিস্ট চার্চ সংঘ ও বাংলাদেশ ব্যাপ্টিস্ট ফেলোশিপ।

তবে, গারোদের প্রায় সবাই এরইমধ্যে খৃস্টে বিশ্বাসী হয়ে ওঠায় বর্তমানে এর কনভার্সনের কাজ বন্ধ আছে। এই চার্চের আওতাধীন বেশিরভাগ গারো সদস্যই মেঘালয় থাকেন।

বাংলাদেশ গারো ব্যাপ্টিস্ট কনভেনশনের ১৩৩তম বার্ষিক সাধারণ সভা এবছর বিরিশিরিতে পালিত হয় ৭ ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে পাঁচ দিন ধরে। যুব সম্মেলন হয় ৬-৯ জুন। দেশের বিভিন্ন এলাকা থেকে হাজারো খ্রিস্ট ভক্ত এতে অংশ নেন। এছাড়াও, বিরিশিরিতে মাতৃ মণ্ডলী প্রতিষ্ঠার দেড়শ বছর উদযাপিত হয় এবছর মেঘালয়ে।[২]

সদস্যপদ

ব্যাপ্টিস্ট ওয়ার্ল্ড অ্যালায়েন্সের গতবছরের তথ্যমতে বাংলাদেশ-ভারত মিলিয়ে এর আওতায় ২,৬১৯টি চার্চ আর ৩,৩৩,৯০৮ জন ব্যাপ্তাইজড সদস্য আছেন। তবে, ১০ বছর আগে (২০১৩ সালে) গারো ব্যাপ্টিস্ট কনভেনশনের দেওয়া তথ্যমতে এর আওতায় ২,৪০৭টি চার্চ আর ২,৬৪,৩৮০ জন সদস্য ছিলেন। এরমধ্যে বাংলাদেশে সদস্য ছিল ১২,৩৪০ জন।[৩]

বাংলাদেশে অবস্থিত অন্যান্য ব্যাপ্টিস্ট কনভেনশনগুলো হলো বাংলাদেশ ব্যাপ্টিস্ট চার্চ সংঘ (সদস্য ১৫,০০০) ও বাংলাদেশ ব্যাপ্টিস্ট ফেলোশিপ। বিরিশিরির এই জিবিসি এশিয়া প্যাসিফিক ব্যাপ্টিস্ট ফেডারেশন (ব্যাপ্টিস্ট ওয়ার্ল্ড অ্যালায়েন্স) ও উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের ব্যাপ্টিস্ট চার্চ কাউন্সিল বা সিবিসিএনইআই-এর সদস্য। এই সিবিসিএনইআই হলো উত্তর-পূর্ব ভারতের ব্যাপ্টিস্ট চার্চগুলোর একটি সমন্বিত সংগঠন। এর অন্যান্য সহযোগী ব্যাপ্টিস্ট সমিতির মধ্যে আছে নাগাল্যান্ড ব্যাপ্টিস্ট চার্চ কাউন্সিল, অরুণাচল ব্যাপ্টিস্ট চার্চ কাউন্সিল ও কারবি-অ্যাংলং ব্যাপ্টিস্ট কনভেনশন।

এখানে আছে জেএনএনবি স্মৃতি ব্যাপ্টিস্ট প্রশিক্ষণ ইনস্টিটিউট, যা জিবিসি পরিচালনা করে। এছাড়াও, মেঘালয়ের তুরায় হার্ডিং থিওলজিক্যাল কলেজ পরিচালনা করে এই চার্চ।

বাংলা ভূখণ্ডে খৃস্টধর্ম প্রচারের ইতিহাস

বাংলাদেশে মোট খৃস্টান সংখ্যা ২০২২ সালের আদমশুমারি অনুযায়ী অন্তত পাঁচ লাখ (০.০৩%)। এর মধ্যে ব্যাপ্টিস্ট এক লাখ ৩৪ হাজার। তবে, বাংলাদেশে রোমান ক্যাথলিকদের সংখ্যাই বেশি।[৪]

বাংলা ভূখণ্ডে খৃস্টধর্ম প্রচারের ইতিহাস বেশ প্রাচীন। আজ থেকে পাঁচ থেকে ছয়শ বছর আগে, অর্থাৎ ১৬শ ও ১৭শ শতাব্দীতে, খৃস্টান মিশনারিরা বাংলায় আসেন। প্রথমে পর্তুগিজরা তাদের সঙ্গে করে খৃস্টান মিশনারিদের এখানে নিয়ে আসে। জেসুইস ও অগস্টেইনিয়া নামে ক্যাথলিক খৃস্টানদের দু’টো দল পর্তুগিজ ব্যবসায়ীদের পৃষ্ঠপোষকতায় ২০০ বছর ধরে বাংলায় খৃস্টধর্ম প্রচার করে। মোগল সম্রাট আকবর তৎকালীন ভারতের বাঙালা প্রদেশের ও বর্তমানে পশ্চিমবঙ্গের হুগলিতে পর্তুগিজদের বসতি স্থাপনের অনুমতি দিয়েছিলেন। মিশনারিরা এসে সেখানে গির্জা, স্কুল ও হাসপাতাল চালু করেন। হুগলিকে কেন্দ্র করে খৃস্টধর্ম প্রচার করতে তারা ঢাকাতেও কাজ শুরু করেন।

এভাবে এই অঞ্চলে খৃস্টান মিশনারিদের তৎপরতা পূর্ণোদ্যমে শুরু হয় ১৬২১ সালে। ১৬৩৩ সালে সম্রাট শাহজাহান ৭৭৭ বিঘা জমি বিনা খাজনায় (লা-খেরাজ) খৃস্টান মিশনারিদের দান করেন। ফলে মিশনারিরা আরও উৎসাহ নিয়ে কনভার্সনের কাজ শুরু করেন। এই মোঘল আমলেই মিশনারিরা অগস্টেইনিয়া গির্জা গড়ে তোলেন। এবং, ১৬৩৩ সালের পর ১৩টি অগস্টেইনিয়া গির্জা গড়ে ওঠে।

ব্রিটিশ আমলে চট্টগ্রামের চন্দ্রঘোনায় ব্যাপ্টিস্টরা এসে ১৯০৮ সালে লিপ্রসি বা কুষ্ঠনিরাময় কেন্দ্র গড়ে তোলেন। ইস্ট ইন্ডিয়া কোম্পানি পুরো ভারতের ক্ষমতা দখলের পর থেকেই খৃস্টান মিশনারিদের তৎপরতা আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে চালু হয়। পর্যায়ক্রমে পাকিস্তান আমলে ও পরে স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশে তাদের তৎপরতা অব্যাহত থাকে।

মিশনারিরা যেখানেই গেছেন সেখানেই সাধারণত পিছিয়ে পড়া সমাজের শিশুদের জন্য একটি করে স্কুল প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছেন। এছাড়াও, হাসপাতাল স্থাপন, ঋণ সুবিধা, ঘূর্ণিঝড় ইত্যাদি প্রাকৃতিক দুর্যোগে ক্ষতিগ্রস্তদের জন্য আশ্রয়কেন্দ্র নির্মাণ এবং দারিদ্র বিমোচনে বিভিন্ন ধরনের কর্মসূচি হাতে নিয়েছেন। এদেশে জটিল রোগের চিকিৎসার জন্যে তারা ডাক্তার, সার্জনদের ইংল্যান্ড থেকে নিয়ে আসেন এবং চট্টগ্রাম, কক্সবাজারের মালুমঘাট, ময়মনসিংহ, রংপুর, রাজশাহীসহ দেশের প্রত্যন্ত অঞ্চলে হাসপাতাল তৈরি করে প্রথমে বিনা পয়সায় চিকিৎসা সেবা দেওয়া শুরু করেন।
