WP:NCPDAB says to use a parethetical disambiguator when needing to distinguish between people with the same names. Years ago, middle names were recommended, but that changed because sources often did not use their full name so readers could not effectively find the one that they wanted to read about. Unless you know of another Navy ace named John Smith, I suggest that you revert yourself. Please accept my sincere apologies for affecting the fine work you did on that article. I was not aware of the current naming guideline or policy, and should have left well enough alone. I am unsure how to correct it now myself, so request that you revert or repair my edits in any way you need to, hopefully leaving a redirect from John Malcolm Smith.

You might notice that I also added one sentence to the end, but forgot to add an inline citation; that content can be cited to the June 1981 People's Press article listed in the sources.
