I started putting the names in lexical order and numbers in numerical order, so that the template delivers what it promises "By name (alphabetical)". I assume that meant in alphabetical order.

However I stopped at S.45 Seaford due to confusing redirects. (it redirects to Short Sunderland which mentions S.45 under "Sunderland Mark IV" which in turn points to Short Seaford). I've done a rejig of this navbox here: to bring some order into things I've divided the aircraft into pre & post 1921 (ie the introduction od officil type numbers). Any comments on or amendments to what I've done would be welcome, before I actually replace the present navbox.
