This stub really needs a new image. The original icon had strong, contrasting colors, which reduce well. Someone changed the original without explanation. --Kevin

I'm concerned about the image currently used: Image:Edward S. Curtis Collection People 021.jpg in the stub template. It is a very nice image at full size, but at the size of the icon for the stub, I find it difficult to recognize what the image is: 0 (zero) … (b)
I've gone through several articles looking for a replacement, and I think any one of these would be better:

My favorite for this purpose is Chief Joseph, number 6. I think this image is much easier to recognize at the 30 pixel setting. What does everyone else think? I agree that #6 of Chief Joseph scales the best. But the the existing one is my second choice, I still find it recognizable, better than the other options.... not really changing my opinion, but I created more custom icons based on a few of the above, a both cropped the images for more focus, and custom reduced them in a program that may be higher quality that browser defaults. Doing this, I think the pueblo and Sequoyah actually look pretty good too. I tried scaling the "original" one too: some cropping, reduce color saturation, fiddle with brightness and contrast, then do a high quality sizing. I think with this minor touchup, I actually like (0)(b) the best now (i.e. Image:ECurtis 021-icon.png); Chief Joseph is second. An alternative idea would be for someone to draw an icon. Here is a web page with some examples of themes we could use [1]. I guess the thing about Chief Joseph is that he is such a well-known historical figure. So I looked at that one, and thought "Chief Joseph". The others I look at and think "some Native American portrait". Well, Quanah Parker is easy to recognize at full size, but not in the icon. That could be either good or bad: one particular individual is not representatitve of all NA persons. Then again, Joseph definitely isn't a bad choice if you want one iconic figure (I mean, historically, not just the photo itself). • On the main project page, Aaron Walden wrote "What if we swapped it with the Sitting Bull image in the Project box? Then both images could still be in use, and it would be easier to see." I added this as opton 9 (above). This would be OK with me as well. I personally would rank this my third choice behing 6 and 3b (above).
