Sota Fukushi (福士 蒼汰, Fukushi Sōta) is a Japanese actor. He rose to prominence portraying Gentaro Kisaragi in Kamen Rider Fourze, and has since starred in television series Koinaka (2016) and My Lover's Secret (2017), as well as films Strobe Edge (2015), My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday (2016), Bleach (2018),[1][2][3] and Kaiji: Final Game (2020).

Biography

Childhood

Sota was a member of the basketball club until junior high school and the double Dutch club from high school. His favorite actor was Teruyuki Kagawa,[4] and Junichi Okada.[5] Due to the influence of Okada, he started to learn Jeet Kune Do and Arnis.[6] His goal was to appear in period dramas and become a versatile actor like Kagawa.[4] He want to be international actor so he diligently practice English. His initial interest in the English language was sparked by a single word of praise from his junior high school teacher.[7]

Career

In 2010, he was scouted by a Ken-on's CEO who had seen his photograph and subsequently became a member of the agency in September of the same year.[8] In January 2011, he made his debut as an actor in Nippon Television Misaki Number One!![8]

Three months after his debut, he auditioned for the lead role in Kamen Rider Fourze (TV Asahi) and was selected from approximately 3,000 applicants for the role of Gentaro Kisaragi.[9] Among the selected candidates was Ryuki Takahashi, who was chosen to co-star as Kengo Utahoshi. During the final interview to select a partner, Fukushi selected Takahashi, and the two actors engaged in a dialogue exchange on a subject provided to them.[10] He was rarely approached by children because his distinctive haircut (regent) in the series was so striking that they did not recognize him as Gentaro with his normal haircut. The film was released in September of the same year.[11]

In 2011, He reprised his role as Gentaro Kisaragi and made his debut as an actor in his inaugural film role in Kamen Rider OOO Wonderful: The Shogun and the 21 Core Medals, which was released in August prior to the commencement of broadcasting. In December, he appeared in film Kamen Rider × Kamen Rider Fourze & OOO: Movie War Mega Max in which he assumed the leading role for the first time.[8]

He subsequently appeared in the NHK TV series Amachan, broadcast in the first half of 2013, playing the role of Koichi Taneichi, a high school senior whom the heroine falls in love with at first sight.[12] He subsequently appeared in the films Library Wars and Enoshima Prism. He was ranked first in the "Breakthrough Actor Ranking for the First Half of 2013"[13] and No. 1 in the "Breakthrough Actor Ranking for 2014," according to Oricon.[14]

In 2014 Sota Fukushi starred in Japanese supernatural horror film As the Gods Will directed by Takashi Miike. It is based on the first arc of the eponymous manga series by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and Akeji Fujimura.[15][16] For the film international release, Sota Fukushi made his international film festival debut at the 9th Rome International Film Festival held in Italy in October 2014. At the official press conference, he greeted the audience in fluent Italian, followed by a speech in English.[7]

In 2015, he was awarded the Best New Actor Award at the 38th Japan Academy Awards for his roles in the films Say 'I Love You', In the Hero, As the Gods Will.[17] In the July season of the same year, he played the lead role in Fuji Television's Koinaka.[18]

In 2016, he appeared in a series of high-profile films, including My Tomorrow, Your Yesterday and in 2017, To Each His Own and Blade of the Immortal.[19] In the movie Kamen Rider Heisei Generations Final: Build & Ex-Aid with Legend Rider released in December of the same year, he played Gentaro Kisaragi for the first time in five years.[20]

In February 2021, he took on his first role as a doctor in the TV Tokyo production In His Chart, in which he portrayed the main character, internist Kazuto Kurihara.[21]
