Li got involved in politics in September 1983, when he was appointed an official in Zhidoi County in northwest China's Qinghai province.[2] He joined the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in September 1984.[2] He was eventually promoted to deputy magistrate in December 1985.[2]
He was chosen as deputy party secretary of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in September 2016, concurrently serving as secretary of the Education Work Committee of the CCP Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Committee and secretary-general of the CCP Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Regional Committee.[2][3]
