McPhail also played professional football in the National Football League (NFL) for the Boston Redskins during the 1934 and 1935 seasons. He appeared in 18 games for the Redskins, scoring 22 points and rushing for 461 yards.[1] He also played in the American Football League for the Cincinnati Bengals in 1937 and 1938 and for the Columbus Bullies in 1939.[1]
After his football career ended, McPhail worked as a clerk for Cincinnati Annex of the Post Office. He died of a heart attack at age 64 in 1977 while mowing the grass at his home in Fort Thomas, Kentucky.[4]
