The Belize Indian Merchants Association (BIMA) based in the Corozal Free Trade Zone, and the Belize Indian Community (BIC) based in Belize City, are two Indian community organisations in Belize. Both organisations have temples in Belize, which also serve as community centres.[3]
The Indian community in Belize dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. They migrated from the Caribbean over a period of about 150 years and have been completely assimilated into the local culture. They are referred to in Belize as Asian Indians or East Indians. As of January 2016, over 1,500 Indians reside in Belize, of which 200 are Indian citizens and the rest are persons of Indian origin. Most of the community is engaged in business and are of Sindhi origin.[3]
Asian Indians constitute approximately four per cent of the population of Belize.[5] As of January 2016, there were 7,000-8,000 Asian Indians in Belize.[3]
