The B2 is a bus route in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Originally operated by the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation, it is now operated by MTA Regional Bus Operations under the New York City Transit brand.

Route description

The B2 route begins at the Kings Highway Station on the BMT Brighton Line in Homecrest,[3] near Midwood,[4] where it loops around on Ocean Avenue, Quentin Road, and East 16th Street. The route then proceeds on Avenue R until East 36th Street, where it starts running in a zig-zag pattern. It heads south towards Avenue S, east towards Flatbush Avenue, and south until terminating at Kings Plaza, at the Marine Park/Mill Basin border.[5][6][7][8]

History

A 2009 Orion VII NG HEV (4243) on the Kings Plaza-bound B2 at Avenue S and Flatbush Avenue

The B2 designation was previously used for a bus route that began in 1922 by the Kings Coach Company that ran between Avenue U to the end of Barren Island where the Marine Parkway Bridge now began.[citation needed] In June 1936, the original B2 was renumbered the B32 (today’s Q35) as the current B2 began service in June 1936 under the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation.[9] On June 1, 1940, the City took over the B2 and all other BMT operations.[citation needed]

Bus service was temporarily extended to Mill Basin to serve former Pioneer Bus Company riders. It was discontinued on October 28, 1979, when the route was taken over by the Command Bus Company.[10]

As a result of budget crises, overnight service was eliminated in 1995, and weekend service was eliminated in June 2010 but was restored in mid-2012.[citation needed]

On December 1, 2022, the MTA released a draft redesign of the Brooklyn bus network. As part of the redesign, the B2 would be discontinued and replaced by the B100 west of Gerritsen Avenue.[11]
