دوري الدرجة الثانية السعودي، وهو الدوري الثالث من حيث الأهمية في الدوريات السعودية بعد دوري المحترفين ودوري الدرجة الأولى وهو المؤهل لفرق أندية دوري الدرجة الأولى السعودي، حيث يتأهل أربع فرق، ويهبط أربعة فرق إلى أندية دوري الدرجة الثالثة السعودي.[3]

انطلق الدوري في 1976/1977، وفي السابق كان الدوري يضم أبطال المناطق، حتى استحدثت مسابقة جديدة تضم ثمانية فرق فقط، وانطلقت موسم 1996/1997 بنظامها الجديد وكان ذلك بقرار من الاتحاد العربي السعودي لكرة القدم، وتكوْن الدوري من الهابطين من دوري الدرجة الأولى السعودي، مع فرق دورة الصعود التي أقيمت في عام 1996 من المركز الثالث إلى الثامن.[4]

وكانت أول اندية لعبت في دوري الدرجة الثانية هي: النهضة، سدوس، الفتح، العربي، الزلفي، الحمادة، السد، نجران، وحقق الفتح بطولة أول دوري وحل نجران وصيفاً له،[4] وفي موسم 2003/2002 تم زيادة الفرق إلى 10 فريقاً،[4][5] وفي موسم 2004/2005 تم زيادة عدد الفرق إلى 12 فريقاً،[4] وفي موسم 2008/2009 تم زيادة عدد الفرق إلى 14 فريقاً،[4] وفي موسم 2010/2011 تم زيادة عدد الفرق إلى 20 فريقاً.[4]
