Anne 1935 isch er z Züri mit ere Arbet übere Johann Jakob Bodmer promoviert worde. Zerscht het er als Privatdozänt und vo 1947 a als Nachfolger vom Robert Faesi und als Profässer für elteri dütschi Literatur glehrt. 1953 isch er Profässer für d Gschicht vo dr düütsche Literatur bis 1700 worde.
