'n Selfoon wat 'n teks ontvang.

SMS (kort vir Short Messaging Service) is 'n kommunikasiediens waar kort boodskappe met 'n selfoon na ander selfone gestuur word. Hierdie boodskappe staan algemeen 'n SMS- of teksboodskappe (soms afgekort tot teks) bekend. 'n Persoon met 'n selfoon kan die diens gebruik om met ander selfoongebruikers te kommunikeer.

SMS-boodskappe kan soms stadig versend, aangesien stemoproepe hoër prioriteit op die netwerk geniet. Die boodskappe het ook 'n limiet van 160 karakters.[1] Langer boodskappe kan soms gestuur word, maar sal onderliggend in korter boodskappe opgedeel word. Die verbruikers betaal egter vir elke korter onderliggende boodskap.

Teksboodskappe word dikwels tussen selfoongebruikers gestuur wanneer 'n stemoproep nie nodig of nie wenslik is nie. Dit is handig in situasies waar absolute stilte belangrik is (soos kerke, klaskamers en biblioteke). Dit kan ook vir privaatheid ingespan word om te keer dat ander mense die gesprek volg.

Die prys per boodskap hang grootliks van die selfoondiensverskaffer af. Meeste maatskappye bied spesiale planne vir verbruikers wat meer SMS-boodskappe wil stuur. Sommige planne kan selfs onbeperkte SMS-boodskappe toelaat.

Geskiedenis

Die eerste SMS-boodskap is op 3 Desember 1992 gestuur.[2] Die boodskap is deur Neil Papworth oor Vodafone se GSM-netwerk in die VK aan Richard Jarvis gestuur. Die doel hieragter was om die stelsel buite die laboratoriums te toets. Die teks van die boodskap was "Merry Christmas".

Die eerste kommersiële ontplooiing van die diens was egter in 1993 in Swede.
