The King (Hangul: 더킹; RR: Deoking) adalah film Korea Selatan produksi tahun 2017 bergenre thriller yang disutradarai oleh Han Jae-rim, sekaligus menuliskan skenarionya. Film ini dibintangi oleh Jo In-sung dan Jung Woo-sung.[2][3][4] The King dirilis secara serentak pada tanggal 18 Januari 2017 oleh Next Entertainment World, dan berhasil meraup keuntungan sebesar US$13,2 juta.[5][6]

Synopsis

Film ini berkisah tentang Tae-soo (Jo In-sung) yang lahir dari keluarga miskin, memutuskan untuk menjadi jaksa penuntut setelah mengetahui bahwa kekuasaan adalah hal yang paling penting dalam hidup dan merupakan simbol terbesar kekuasaan pada dasawarsa 1990-an. Setelah memasuki sekolah hukum paling bergengsi, dia mengalami resistensi menyusul kondisi demokrasi di Korea, Tae-soo akhirnya mencapai tujuannya menjadi jaksa tapi hidupnya tidak lebih baik dari seorang pegawai honorer. Datanglah suatu kesempatan, ia bergabung dengan kelompok jaksa yang kuat dengan kekayaan dan wewenang. Dia akhirnya menikmati hidup sebagai orang yang memiliki kekuasaan hierarki, tetapi karena ia terlalu terbuai oleh manisnya kehormatan, ia juga melihat sisi lain kehidupan kejam dari situ.

Latar belakang

Bedah naskah skenario dilakukan pada akhir bulan Januari 2016.[11] Proses produksi film dimulai pada tanggal 4 Februari sampai dengan 3 Juli 2016, dengan mengambil lokasi di Seoul, Daejeon dan Busan, Korea Selatan.[12]

Trailer film ini memecahkan rekor pengunjung di Korea Selatan, dengan pengunjung sebanyak 7.17 juta dalam tujuh hari bersamaan dengan rilis.[13] The King secara serentak dirilis di Korea Selatan pada tanggal 18 Januari 2017. Rilis secara terbatas dilakukan di Amerika Utara, pada tanggal 27 Januari 2017[14] Film ini menempati peringkat pertama box office Korea Selatan, dengan penghasilan sebesar US$13,2 juta pada akhir pekan pemutaran.[1]
