Sistem pewarisan historis

Sistem pewarisan sejarah berbeda dengan hukum waris yang diketahui oleh berbagai orang.

Kajian mendalam dalam bidang antropologi dan sosiologi telah dilakukan terhadap adat istiadat pewarisan patrilineal, di mana pewarisan hanya diteruskan melalui garis keturunan laki-laki. Sejumlah budaya juga menganut suksesi matrilineal, di mana properti diwariskan melalui garis keturunan perempuan dan seringkali diberikan kepada anak laki-laki dari saudara perempuan almarhum, dan terkadang dari ibu ke anak perempuannya. Beberapa masyarakat, baik kuno maupun modern, menerapkan sistem warisan egaliter tanpa membedakan berdasarkan jenis kelamin dan/atau urutan kelahiran.
