DINOSAURUS, hewan yang pernah hidup jutaan tahun silam, memang menarik.
jenisnya banyak sekali dan sekarang koleksi dinosaurus kita sudah
ditambah dengan jenis dinosaurus yang aneh.
Nama lengkap dinosaurus ini adalah Nigersaurus Taqueti. Nama ini dipilih untuk menghormati negara tempat dinosaurus ditemukan, Nigeria. sedangkan Taqueti, ahli paleontologi dari Perancis yang menemukan tulang belulang Nigersaurus pada tahun 1950-an. dia menemukan tulang pertama Nigersaurus di Gadoufaona, Nigeria. pada saat itu dinosaurus jenis ini belum memiliki nama.
Beberapa tahun kemudian, karya Taqueti dilanjutkan oleh tim peneliti yang dipimpin oleh Paul Sereno, ahli paleontologi dari University of Chicago, Amerika Serikat.
Nigersaurus dewasa memiliki panjang sekitar 9m. Tinggi pinggulnya 2,5m, beratnya diperkirakan 1800 kg. Ada yang aneh dengan tulang Nigersaurus. beberapa tulang tengkorak sangat tipis sehingga bisa tembus pandang. beberapa tulang lainnya ringan dan cenderung rapuh. ternyata tulang-tulang tersebut mampu menopang tubuh Nigersaurus yang besar dan berat. Aneh, tapi hebat!
Ada keanehan lain yang tak kalah menarik dari Nigersaurus. lihat mulutnya. moncongnya terasa lebar, lebih lebar dari bagian belakang kepala. ini membuat bentuk kepala Nigersaurus unik dan tidak biasa.
Yang tak kalah aneh adalah giginya. dengan rahang bermata persegi, gigi Nigersaurus hanya anterior, seperti sisir dan kecil.
Untuk mengungkap rahasia lain yang ada di kepala Nigersaurus, para ahli menggunakan sinar-X yang disebut pemindai tomografi terkomputasi (computed tomography scanner).
Alat ini bekerja seperti mata superman yang dapat melihat sesuatu di balik tembok. Hasilnya mengejutkan. para ahli menemukan gigi Nigersaurus bertumpuk seperti baterai senter, berjumlah sekitar 500 gigi!
Nigersaurus taqueti hidup sekitar 110 juta tahun yang lalu. saat itu gurun sahara subur dan penuh pepohonan, air melimpah. sebagai hewan herbivora, Nigersaurus suka memakan tumbuhan. Vegetasi yang disukainya adalah tanaman lunak seperti pinus muda dan rerumputan.
