Place de la République (sebelumnya dikenal sebagai Place du Château d'eau)[1] adalah sebuah alun-alun di Paris, terletak di perbatasan antara arondisemen ke-3, ke-10, dan ke-11 Alun-alun memiliki luas 34 ha (84 ekar).[2] Tempat ini diberi nama berdasarkan Republik Prancis, dinamakan Place du Château-d'eau sampai tahun 1879, dan terdapat sebuah monumen yang meliputi sebuah patung personifikasi Prancis, Marianne.

Sejarah dan arsitektur

Alun-alun ini awalnya dinamakan Place du Château d'Eau , berdasarkan nama sebuah air mancur raksasa yang dirancang oleh Pierre-Simon Girard dan dibangun di lokasi tersebut pada tahun 1811.[3] Émile de La Bédollière menulis bahwa airnya berasal dari la Villette dan bahwa air mancur itu "luar biasa" dalam reputasinya. Pada tahun 1867, Gabriel Davioud membangun sebuah air mancur yang lebih mengesankan di alun-alun, yang (seperti air mancur pertama) dihiasi dengan singa-singa.[3] Alun-alun dengan bentuknya saat ini merupakan bagian dari renovasi Paris besar-besaran oleh Baron Hausmann.[4] Haussmann juga membangun barak baru di kota-kota, untuk pasukan garnisun yang berguna pada saat terjadi kerusuhan sipil.[5]
