Penyakit periodontal atau penyakit gusi adalah kondisi peradangan dan kerusakan jaringan pendukung gigi.[3] Pada tahap awal (disebut gingivitis), gusi mengalami bengkak, memerah, dan mungkin juga berdarah.[3] Pada tahap yang lebih serius (disebut periodontitis), jaringan gusi bisa terpisah dari gigi, tulang penyangga gigi bisa rusak, dan gigi bisa lepas dari gusi.[3] Pada kondisi ini, bau mulut dapat terjadi.[1]

Penyakit periodontal umumnya diakibatkan oleh bakteri di mulut yang menginfeksi jaringan pendukung gigi.[3] Faktor yang semakin meningkatkan risiko munculnya penyakit ini adalah kebiasaan merokok, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, riwayat keluarga, dan obat tertentu.[1] Diagnosis dilakukan dengan memeriksa jaringan gusi di sekitar gigi secara visual atau dengan menggunakan prob periodontal dan sinar X.[1][5]

Penyakit ini dapat dicegah dengan menjaga kebersihan mulut dan melalui pembersihan oleh dokter gigi.[3][6] Tindakan menjaga kebersihan yang dapat dilakukan adalah dengan menyikat gigi dan menggunakan benang gigi.[3] Bagi orang yang sudah terserang penyakit ini, antibiotik atau operasi gigi dapat disarankan.[7] Pada tahun 2015, diperkirakan terdapat sekitar 538 juta orang yang terdampak penyakit ini.[4]
