Lewis Allan "Lou" Reed (2 Maret 1942 – 27 Oktober 2013) adalah musisi rock dan penulis lagu Amerika Serikat.^[1] Selain menjadi gitaris, vokalis, dan penulis utama the Velvet Underground, karier solonya juga bertahan selama beberapa dasawarsa. The Velvet Underground gagal di pasaran pada akhir 1960-an, namun grup ini mulai mendapat banyak pengikut pada tahun-tahun pasca pembubarannya dan menjadi salah satu band paling banyak dibicarakan dan berpengaruh waktu itu,^[2] sehingga Brian Eno pernah berkata soal penjualan 30.000 album perdananya, "setiap orang yang ikut membeli 30.000 album tersebut sekarang sudah punya band sendiri."^[3]

Setelah keluar dari grup ini, Reed mulai berkarier solo pada tahun 1972. Namanya melejit pada tahun berikutnya dengan "Walk on the Wild Side", tetapi kesuksesan komersialnya tidak sebagus posisinya di tangga lagu.^[4] Pada tahun 1975, Reed merilis album ganda berulang, Metal Machine Music, dan berkomentar bahwa "tidak seorangpun yang mampu melakukan hal seperti itu dan bertahan hidup."^[5] Reed dikenal karena suaranya yang datar, lirik puitis, dan merintis dan menciptakan istilah ostrich guitar.^[6]
