Katolik KTP adalah orang Katolik yang telah dibaptis namun tidak melakukan praktiknya.^[1] Orang semacam itu masih diidentifikasikan sebagai orang Katolik^[2] dan masih menjadi orang Katolik menurut hukum kanon.^[3]

Pengajaran Katolik tentang keanggotaan dalam Gereja

Menurut kepercayaan Katolik, pembaptisan "menyegelkan orang Kristen dengan tanda spiritual yang terpisahkan dari Yesus. Tak ada dosa yang bisa menghapuskan tanda ini, bahkan dosa yang menghindarkan pembaptisan dari penyematan buah keselamatan."^[4]

Bahkan bentuk pelepasan yang dikenal sebagai ekskomunikasi tak membuat seseorang menjadi eks-Katolik: orang yang diekskomunikasi adalah orang yang "hubungannya dipotong dari Gereja", dihindarkan dari penerimaan Ekaristi dan ikut serta dalam liturgi (pembacaan, pelayanan di altar, dll), namun mereka masih Katolik.^[5] Mereka masih dibujuk untuk ikut serta dengan Gereja, dengan tujuan mendorong mereka bertobat dan kembali ke partisipasi aktif dalam kehidupannya.

Nama kolokuial

Beberapa Katolik KTP mengikuti Misa pada saat-saat khusus seperti Natal (Christmas) dan Paskah (Easter). Katolik KTP semacam itu secara kolokuial disebut dengan istilah-istilah seperti Katolik budaya, Katolik kapal selam (Submarine Catholics), Dua waktu (Two-Timers), Chreaster,^[6]^[7] Katolik C&E, Katolik Poinsettia & Lily,^[7] APEC (Ash Wednesday, Palm Sunday, Easter, and Christmas/Rabu Abu, Minggu Palma, Paskah, dan Natal), CEO (Christmas and Easter Only/Hanya Natal dan Paskah), Katolik CAPE (Christmas, Ash [Wednesday], Palm [Sunday], Easter/Natal, [Rabu] Abu, [Minggu] Palma, Paskah), Katolik PACE (Palm [Sunday], Ash [Wednesday], Christmas, Easter/[Minggu] Palma, [Rabu] Abu, Natal, Paskah), Katolik CASE (Christmas and Sometimes Easter/Natal dan Terkadang Paskah), CME (Christmas, Mother's Day and Easter/Natal, Hari Ibu dan Paskah), atau Katolik A&P (Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday/Rabu Abu dan Minggu Palma).^[8]

"Katolik budaya" juga merujuk kepada anggota non-relijius dari sebuah kelompok etnis Katolik, seperti orang Austria,^[9] orang Belgia, orang Bayern,^[10] orang Kroasia, orang Prancis, orang Prancis Kanada, orang Filipina, orang Hungaria,^[11] orang Irlandia, orang Italia, orang Lithuania, orang Malta, orang Polandia,^[12] orang Portugis, orang Spanyol,^[13] orang Slovenia, orang Slowakia dan orang Amerika Latin.^[14]
