Black Clouds & Silver Linings adalah album studio kesepuluh oleh band progressive metal Dream Theater, dirilis pada tanggal 23 Juni 2009 melalui Roadrunner Records. Ini adalah album terakhir dari drummer dan pendiri band Mike Portnoy sebelum pengunduran dirinya pada tanggal 8 September 2010. Album ini direkam antara Oktober 2008 dan Maret 2009 di Avatar Studios di New York City.

Sejarah

Dream Theater mulai bekerja di album ini pada bulan Oktober 2008. Mike Portnoy menggambarkan Black Clouds & Silver Linings sebagai "sebuah album Dream Theater dengan 'A Change of Seasons', 'Octavarium', Learning to Live', 'Pull Me Under' dan 'The Glass Prison' dalam satu album."[1] Jordan Rudess kemudian menjelaskan selama demonstrasi di NAMM Show untuk software/perangkat lunak Spectrasonics (yang ia digunakan di album ini), "Kami telah memasukkan sedikit domain Gothic di album ini."[2] Tetapi karena ia berada di sebuah pameran dagang Industri Musik dan menjelaskan tentang bagian tertentu dari perangkat lunak pada saat itu, terjadi perdebatan apakah dia membuat pernyataan menyeluruh mengenai nada sonic atau lirik album atau hanya bunyi keyboard ketika menggunakan kata software.

Tema Lirik

Lirik album ditulis oleh John Petrucci dan Mike Portnoy, dan semua lagu, (kecuali satu lagu) berkisah tentang pengalaman pribadi saat-saat meresahkan atau sulit dalam hidup mereka. Sebagian besar lagu ditulis oleh Petrucci, "A Nightmare to Remember" didasarkan pada insiden mobil pada masa kecil. "The Count of Tuscany", tentang pertemuan yang sebenarnya yang ada di Tuscany, dan "Wither" tentang kesulitannya dalam proses penulisan lagu.[3] "The Best of Times" ditulis oleh Mike Portnoy tentang ayahnya, yang meninggal karena kanker. "Saya hanya ingin menulis sesuatu yang merupakan penghargaan untuk kehidupan kami bersama-sama," kata Portnoy, yang memainkan lagu untuk ayahnya sebelum kematiannya.[4] "The Shattered Fortress" adalah bagian akhir dari Twelve-step Suite Portnoy, mengulangi dan menyimpulkan tema dan motif dari suite yang dimulai pada album tahun 2002, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. Tanggapan kritis awal untuk Black Clouds & Silver Linings umumnya menguntungkan. Di Metacritic, memberikan sebuah nilai Standard Peringkat dari 100 untuk review dari kritikus mainstream, album ini telah menerima skor rata-rata 68, berdasarkan lima ulasan.[15] Rich Wilson, penulis Lifting Shadows, pratinjau album untuk Metal Hammer, menyebut album "sebagai album Dream Theater yang terbaik dan paling seimbang dalam satu dekade."[16] Eduardo Rivadavia dari Allmusic memberikan album empat dari lima bintang menulis, "Black Clouds & Silver Linings masih merupakan tipikal album Dream Theater, yang tidak mungkin untuk memperluas audiens mereka, tetapi sebaliknya dijamin menggetarkan audiens hardcore.
