Bicoid protein homeotik dikodekan oleh gen efek ibu bcd di Drosophila. Pola gradien konsentrasi bicoid protein homeotik sumbu anterior-posterior (AP) selama embriogenesis Drosophila. Struktur dan fungsi

Bicoid adalah salah satu dari sedikit protein yang menggunakan homeodomainnya untuk mengikat target DNA dan RNA masing-masing untuk mengatur transkripsi dan translasinya. Homeodomain pengikat asam nukleat Bicoid telah diselesaikan dengan NMR.^[15] Bicoid mengandung motif kaya arginin (bagian dari heliks ditunjukkan secara aksial pada gambar ini) yang mirip dengan yang ditemukan pada protein HIV REV dan penting untuk pengikatan asam nukleatnya.^[16]

Pembentukan gradien protein bicoid adalah salah satu langkah paling awal dalam pola AP embrio lalat buah. Ekspresi spasial yang tepat dari gen hilir bergantung pada kekokohan gradien ini untuk variasi umum antara embrio, termasuk dalam jumlah mRNA bicoid yang disimpan secara maternal dan dalam ukuran telur. Studi filogenetik komparatif^[3] dan evolusi eksperimental^[10] menunjukkan mekanisme yang melekat untuk generasi yang kuat dari gradien protein Bicoid berskala.
